Food Safety in Australia

FOOD SAFETY IN AUSTRALIA

The government of Australia faces the challenge of continually improving food safety. In order to improve public health and safety, the Australian Government is very strict in safeguarding the food safety handling of all the food chains in the country.

The food standard safety of Australia is being strictly imposed by the Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ).  FSANZ is a bi-national Government agency whose responsibility is to develop and administer the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code, which lists requirements for foods such as additives, food safety, labelling and GM foods.

The approach of this food standard agency requires the highest possible standard of upholding food safety among all manufacturing, retail and the food services sectors of Australia.

This allows Australia to properly ensure public health in the food supply as it also builds consumer confidence, safeguards international trade in food and improve levels of food safety for all the people of Australia.

The Food Safety Standards in Australia were specifically developed to provide more effective and nationally uniform food safety legislation for the whole of Australia. The country’s Food Safety Standards require food businesses that process food to implement a documented and audited food safety program.  Maintenance of clean business premises in terms of equipment, work area fixtures and food transport vehicles are also strictly implemented at all times.

All food agencies and businesses in Australia are to adhere to the policies and standards set forth by the Australian government. These standards under the Food Standard Agency include: Food standards code, consumer’s information such as labeling, food recalls, food technologies and food additives.

FSANZ as the food standard agency of both Australia and New Zealand also engages in science strategy that uses scientific analysis framework to beat the continuing challenges in food safety regulation.
